Do you know how Mexico lost Texas and Oklahoma to the US?
Generalissimo Santa Ana had a French-trained force of over 5,000 men, fully equipped and battle-hardened. He faced a motley Texas army of roughly 2500 who were scrounging for weapons.
One day, Santa Ana decided to take a few of his favorite troups off for a vacation of sorts. He gathered about 200 troups, a few cannons (--He was the Generallissimo, after all.--) and headed for a river to take a few days off from the war.
The river, really a stream, was called the San Jacinto.

A little after midday, the Mexicans took a siesta. It's a tradition to take a nap in the hot afternoons in Mexico.

Turns out, the Texans found them.
General Sam Houston and about 1000 men found the Mexican camp, formed up, and headed across the rolling hills towards the Mexicans. Their camp was over 2 miles away over open ground.
The Texans first marched to the drummers, then jogged, then marched. As they got closer, their ranks fell apart and they just started running. When they got about 150 yards away, they started shouting, "Remember the Alamo" and "Remember Goliad", and running towards the Mexican camp.
The Mexicans woke up, fired a couple of cannon shots, then broke for the creek and marshes.

It took over a half an hour for the Texans to cross the two miles of rolling hills and grass. Once they got into the Mexican camp, the whole battle was over in two hours.
Houston's men captured Santa Ana disguised in a private's uniform trying to sneak away. They probably wouldn't have known they had him but the Mexican soldiers started saluting and snapping to attention when Santa Ana was marched past...
Sounds like a bad joke, doesn't it?
(If you want to read a more officious version, click here. It makes everyone seem a lot more military and conscious than the realities.)
That's the story of the famous Battle of San Jacinto, where Texas won independence from Mexico and formed the short-lived nation of Tejas.

Why am I reminded of San Jacinto?
Well, let's see. The fathers4equality group on Yahoo has finally shown some motion and organization. Groups are forming in Melbourne, Perth, and Queensland. The first meeting of the Melbourne group was Wednesday.
In over a year of following this group and participating, for the first time people are actually gathering and trying to find ways to overcome the brutal inequities in the law and how it's implemented.
The fathers4equality email list has been the focal point and center of communication for these groups.

The members of the fathers4equality group, 1100 members and about 30% of them women, have their families, possessions, and homes at risk. A few across Australia are bravely stepping forward to try to change things for everyone.
So what happens?

James goes on a two-week vacation, and the group stops functioning.
At a crucial time for the the organization of these centers of action, the lines go silent. James didn't bother to make sure someone was there to just moderate the messages.

Happy siesta, James.

  • And just as I posted this article, a new digest from fathers4equality appears in my Yahoo mailbox.

Someone must be moderating after all.

Oh well, it never hurts to tell a little Texas history.
