Images of Brutality
Here is the first image from a children's book.
An aussie friend took some offense to the idea that the Australian government considered all men in Australia, not just Australian men but any man within the boundaries of the country, to be violent brutes.
Look at this image. It is one of 11 that make up this book. To quote the title page:
The original cartoons which form the storybook are a creation of MARTA PONTI, artist at The Deli Women and Children’s Centre. The Deli is a family support service located in the inner Sydney suburb of Botany, and one of the services which participated in the research. The Clearinghouse extends warm thanks to Marta for her
imaginative and humorous cartoons.
...
The storybook title, “Send Violence Packing”, was suggested by Kirsten Busby, Regional Violence Prevention Specialist for the Mid North Coast of NSW.
The storybook was conceived and realised by Robyn Edwards, 'Staying home/leaving violence' researcher, and Dale Gietzelt, Clearinghouse Information Officer.
The caption beneath the picture reads: "1. Take him away officer, there’s no room in my home for violence."
I have to admit that I don't see the warmth or humour in these images. Nor do I think any reasonable, intelligent person would. Frankly, they remind me of the most offensive propoganda images generated during WWI and WWII, depicting the evil Germans and Japanese.
My friend had a hard time looking at these pages. And when he and his wife saw that they were produced with the assistance and endorsement of the University of New South Wales and were "An Australian Government Initiative" -- indicated at the bottom of all pages -- they were both ashamed and disgusted.
I don't blame them. Their shame and disgust are normal reactions to such blatant, near-pornographic depictions of men and fathers, and intended for the children of Australia.
I wonder how much money has been spent to fund this "initiative"? .. and how many copies of this book have been put before impressionable young minds?
