Austalian Psychological Society promotes sexist discrimination

This press release illustrates either a blatant sexism and discrimination, a total lack of professional awareness, an organizational commitment to discrimination and sexism -- or all of the above.

As you can see, it was released by the Communications Manager of the Australian Psychological Society, Elaine Grant, quoting the Australian Psychological Society President, Amanda Gordon.

Media Release, 24 May 2006
Family violence is not restricted to Indigenous Australians

Australian psychologists are concerned that there are racist undertones in much of the recent public discussion regarding child abuse and domestic violence in some indigenous communities.

`We are very troubled by these reports, especially those from the Alice Springs and Darwin areas,' said Australian Psychological Society President, Amanda Gordon. `No one can condone attacks on women or children under any circumstances.'

`However, much of the media discussion has implied that this is a particular problem for indigenous Australians. In fact, we know that domestic violence and child abuse occur in all sections of Australian society, even if some people have been reluctant to acknowledge that,' aid Gordon.
While these eminent Australians make a strong case of avoiding stereotypes about indigenous peoples, they perpetuate the disinformation campaign against all Australian men!
The implication that only men are attacking women and children is factually false, and it can only be assumed that both these responsible women know it.

When contacted to respond to this blatantly sexist article, -- which was distributed to all major news outlets and psychology professionals, -- Ms Grant referred the caller to a Mr Bob Montgomery, at 0419 970 582.
Mr Montgomery has not been available for comment despite repeated attempts to contact him.

You might think, reasonably, that Ms Grant -- who is responsible for the content of all press releases -- would take responsibility for the sexist, discriminatory comments of the President of the Society, Ms Gordon, and issue a statement in rebuttal and apology; instead of directing the callers to a subordinate who cannot be contacted.

It is this sort of systemic perversion of professional discretion that has created a court system based on perjury. -- Where are the elected leaders who are supposed to be protecting the rights of all citizens?

  • I will send you on a seperate email a summary of reseach citations (published research, from repudible journals) showing that...

    1: Killing their own children
We have found 11 citations to published research showing that where a parent
(including step-parent) kills their child, the parent is the biological mother in the
majority of cases. There is remarkable consistency that 55%-60% of perpetrators
    were mothers.

2:Women commit MORE domestic violence against children
Of all forms of domestic violence, violence against children must be given far more
    significance than violence between parents.
We have found 11 citations to published research showing that men are no more
likely to abuse their children than their mothers. In six of the citations, mothers are
shown to be more likely to abuse their children than a father.

3: Womens’ domestic violence against men
We believe that violence between parents is much less significance than violence
against children. Especially since previous violence between parents is unlikely to
continue after separation. Never-the-less it is used as the justification of the Family
Court to remove a father from the lives of his children.
We have found 387 citations to published research showing that women’s domestic
violence to men has similar frequency as men’s to women. The majority of the
studies show that women are a little more likely to initiate violence than men.
Many of them also note that the rate of injury is similar also, with women more
likely to use a weapon than men.

4: 348 studies show that women and men initiate domestic violence equally
This summary bibliography examines 17 4 scholarly investigations: 138 empirical
studies and 36 reviews and/or analyses, which demonstrate that women are as
physically aggressive, or more aggressive, than men in their relationships with their
spouses or male partners. The aggregate sample size in the reviewed studies
exceeds 163,800. shows that men constitute anywhere from 36 to 50 percent of
    domestic violence victims.

  • Psychologist recommendations for child-custody counselling

    1. Psych should be open to parenting alternatives.
    - no bias toward mum or dad

    2. psych should be able to help the most able parent, which could easily be
the father, vigorously pursue a legal decision.
A father must challenge judges objectivity at the trial - must hvae courage.

    3. psych should maintain objective stance.

    4. psych should offer evaluative info from a scientific base - interpretaion
of the data must be well defined.

    5. psych should be family advocate - overall family goals. best for child
    outcome - present and future

    6. psych should help the 'father'(yes the father)prepare for and adapt to the
new parenting relationship with the child (day to day care)

    7. psych should give special attention to facilitating a more comprehensive
father/child relationship especially to communication (amazing isn't it).
    - psych must support relationship goals.

    8. psych should encourage proper future contacts, as might be in the best
interests of thechild, between mother and father. - help parents re-define
their relationship as two parents working together for teh child.

    9. psych should assure that instituional restrictions do not jeoperdize
professional services to the family. (Some psych are restricted by doctors,
courts etc, you know dont do this dont do that)

    10. psych must gain adequate professional training in child custody.
The psych MUST accept fathers involvement and properly work with fathers
    (QUOTE)

A judge a long time ago in America decided against Mum having full custody
because the child "could only enjoy Mums love and attention at the expense of
substantial loss of fathers companionship" and this was deemed to be too heavy
a price to pay - where have judges like this gone???

Hope this helps and makes you all walk into your conciliation conferences and
counselling sessions with just a little tool belt. Take the list with you,
never show them or say where you got it. Make them go back to their books and
re-read what they are meant to do!

    Good luck all.

  • Three callers associated with fathers4equality attempted to contact a responsible person at the Australian Psychological Society.

In all three calls, Mr Cunningham refused to explain his sexist and discriminatory words, but he did hang up rudely.
In one attempt, Ms Grant explained that although her name was on the Press Release, she was not a psychologist and had no control over the content. She suggested the caller try to reach Ms Gordon.
Ms Gordon does not seem to be either responsible nor available.

Two of the callers have said they will continue to seek a responsible answer.
I expect a few more calls and callers in the near future.

It probably won't make any difference.
I doubt Mr Cunningham was doing anything more than cut-n-paste to fill in his articles.
Sexism and discrimination against men and fathers by Australian government agencies is always a safe filler.

  • Mr Cunningham has characterized the calls and letters complaining about his discriminatory and sexist comments as "harassing" in a response to Ash Patil of fathers4equality Australia.
