RADAR

(A News Release from RADAR --Respecting Accuracy in Domestic Abuse Reporting)

RADAR ALERT:
VAWA Campaign Reaches Over 10 Million
Change is in the air!

In the past month and a half, RADAR has orchestrated a campaign to inform legislators about civil rights abuses under VAWA that Congress surely did not intend.

Twenty-seven organizations across the country co-signed a Resolution Regarding the Violence Against Women Act. (See http://www.mediaradar.org/docs/VAWA-Resolution.pdf)

The past month's activities are detailed at http://www.mediaradar.org/accomplishments2006SpringCampaign.php. Below are just a few of the highlights:

a.. RADAR released a series of Special Reports documenting the abuses that occur under VAWA. These were faxed to over 460 federal and state government officials.
a.. VAWA: Threat to Families, Children, Men, and Women http://www.mediaradar.org/docs/VAWA-Threat-to-Families.pdf
b.. Without Restraint: The Use and Abuse of Domestic Restraining
Orders
http://www.mediaradar.org/docs/VAWA-Restraining-Orders.pdf
c.. VAWA Programs Discriminate Against Male Victims

d.. Justice Denied: Arrest Policies for Domestic Violence

e.. Bias in the Judiciary: The Case of Domestic Violence
http://www.mediaradar.org/docs/Bias-In-The-Judiciary.pdf
b.. Countless members of the organizations that co-signed the resolution wrote their Senators and Representatives.
c.. Representatives of many of the co-signing organizations:
a.. held meetings with their elected officials
b.. were interviewed on radio, including on the Sean Hannity radio show, which has 10+ million listeners
c.. published editorials
d.. Newspapers across the country printed articles on the issue.
e.. RADAR and SAFE-NH submitted written comments to be included in the minutes of the meeting of the National Advisory Committee on VAWA on April 25-26.
And so, with your help, we've made a good start at getting the word out, all across the nation.
From California to the New York island, from the Redwood forests to the Gulf Stream waters, our voices are starting to be heard.

Now if only Australia were listening.
