Life Changing Injury

Monday, July 17, 2006

If you read this stuff below, you'd be ready to arrest every man just for being male. And hold him in jail until he gets at least to age 50 or so.

It is often considered that violence against women is a women’s issue. It is true that women have played a key role in rasing community awareness of violence issues in the past, but it is now time for men to step in and champion the elimination of violence against women. There are a number of compelling reasons:
Its pervasive prevalence
  • 57% of Australian women experience at least one incident of physical violence or sexual violence in their lifetime (Mouzos & Makkai 2004)
  • 1.1 million Australian women (or 23% of women surveyed) experience violence by a previous partner, including during and after the relationship,
  • 42% (292,100) of women experience violence during pregnancy,
  • with almost half of these women (20%) stating that violence occurred for the first time while they were pregnant
  • with younger women being almost seven times more at risk than older women,
  • with 7.3% of 18-24 year old women experiencing violence from a current partner in the previous 12 month period as compared to 1.2% of women aged 55 and over (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 1998 Crime and Safety Survey)
But read it again carefully, and this time consider the latest authoritative studies which indicate that 60% of domestic violence goes both ways. (I'll just cite another recent study:
In fact, what our findings suggest is that amongst young adults, men and women are equally violent towards partners, in terms of the range of acts of domestic violence examined in this study.)

The read it again and add the fact that more nearly 1.5 times as many women as men attack children.

Suddenly, those horrifying statistics have a wholly different meaning, don't they?
This is what's called "disinformation" -- using half the story to provoke a targetted reaction.

Where does this come from? It's a Powerpoint presentation to advertise White Ribbon Day.
This advertising kit is what Mr Montgomery cites as authoritative, and the reasoning behind his sexist article for the Australian Psychology Society.
It's an advertising kit, Mr Montgomery. It is intended to promote an event. It is not intended to be used to set national policy for a responsible professional organization without considerable critical thought and research -- unless the professional organization intends to express discriminatory, sexist, and prejudiced views.

  • Let me try an example to illustrate the idea that the statistics in the article are meaningless.

    * 57% of residents in Australia know an urban terrorist
    * 2 million Australians will live in fear for their safety, peace of mind, and pets because of such an abusive woman, including after moving from a home or while still living in their homes
    * 45 % of women will avoid going out because of the influence of the urban terrorist while pregnant
    * over half these women (60%+) will fear the abuse of themselves, their children or pets
    * younger women will be more at risk than older women
    * at least 3% of younger women will experience a direct verbal or physical assault from the urban terrorist

Sounds terrible, doesn't it? And it is something completely avoidable if the courts will require more proof from complainants before issuing Intervention Orders.
    Now follow the link.
The 2 million Australians figure was taken from three numbers: 57% from the article referring to buse experienced by women; a census estimate that there are 950,000 households in Australia; and 3.8 people in the average family (1.8 children and two adults)
I'm assuming less than half of the pregnant women will refuse to go out in spite of this dysfunctional personality; yet more than half will fear for their family members and pets.
Younger women will be more at risk to experience abuse because they will be more aggressive and impatient.

  • Without knowing where the figures come from, and unless a little critical thinking is applied, it is easy to generate fear-mongering statistics from thin air.

  • BTW, Mr Montgomery and Mr Holding, study after study from Australia and around the world say that 8% of men and 7% of women have abusive personalities. That's at total of 15% of the population.

Intuitively, 15% is a far more accurate figure than the 87% of men in relationships in Australia that is taught to student lawyers, social workers and volunteers, and other functionaries across Australia.
If 87% of the men in Australia are abusive, then there must be something in the air or water affecting all those new arrivals; or Australia is a truly sick and sad society.
